The Artisan

Guy McConnell is an artisan well known for his Damascus Knives and Damascus Art. In his northeast Missouri shop, Guy forges his own Damascus Steel using both a Coal Fired forge and a Gas Fired forge creating billets of steel with many popular patterns including:

Maiden’s Hair     Pool & Eye
Ladder                Star
Mosaic                Random

From these billets, Guy crafts an assortment of knives, axes, tomahawks, tools, and art work. These items are often sold around the country at Mountain Man Rendezvous reenactments, knife shows, and over the telephone.

A few times a year Guy is invited to give lectures on knife making, blacksmithing, and Damascus steel. Often, Guy has taught one on one classes in knife making. When done his students go home with the items they’ve made, and the satisfaction of learning an ancient art.

The Road To Becoming a Knifemaker

Guy McConnell was born and raised near the small farming community of Novelty, Missouri.  His father Carl was a man of many trades including farming, post man, bridge builder, and building contractor.  His mother Eva volunteered at the local library, high school, many civic organizations, and was a talented artist.

After graduating from high school, Guy became a Commercial Pilot and flew charters around the northern Missouri region.  Later he continued his aviation career by becoming an Air Traffic Controller, working in the Kansas City and Chicago centers.

Upon retiring from the FAA, Guy moved his family back to northeast Missouri and started an Antique Restoration business with his wife Juanita.  Over time Guy became allergic to the chemical strippers used in the antique business and he had to seek something new to occupy his time.

One day while at an auction, a Blacksmith’s forge came up for sale.  Blacksmithing was something that always intrigued Guy. Seeing this forge may have revived memories from his childhood when he and his father would go to the local Blacksmith shop.  Anyhow he won the bid on the forge and so began his career in metal working.
